Know your NHS number!

WHAT IS MY NHS NUMBER?

Everyone registered with the NHS in England and Wales has their own unique NHS number.  Each number is made up of 10 digits

WHY DO I NEED TO KNOW IT?

As the number is unique to each individual, if used in conjunction with other information (eg name, date of birth and hospital number) it helps us retrieve your records more easily, share them safely with others who are caring for you and improve the efficiency of your care.

You do not need to know your NHS number in order to obtain treatment but it helps us and you if you are able to provide it.

HOW DO I FIND OUT MY NUMBER?

If you are currently receiving treatment within a hospital or other clinical service you may already have the number on any correspondence between you.

If you are registered with a GP practice they will be able to give you  your number when next attending. For security you may be asked to show your passport, driving licence or similar proof of your identity.

If you are NOT currently registered with a GP practice but think you already have an NHS number please contact the Primary Care Support Service on 01392 356116. They will ask for your name, date of birth and address and then send you your number direct by post.

If you have NEVER registered with a GP practice you will not have an NHS number.  When you register with a local GP practice you will be issued with an NHS number as part of the registration process.

If you are visiting the country for fewer than 3 months you will NOT be given a permanent NHS Number.
