What is the Smokefree Devon Alliance?

It is is a partnership of all those organisations that have an interest in reducing tobacco use including, protecting people from secondhand smoke, preventing uptake of smoking by young people, supporting people to stop smoking and reducing the availability of smuggled and counterfeit tobacco. 

In Devon, the Alliance Steering Group forms the strategy and action plans of the Alliance.  For a copy see the Documents section at the foot of this page. 

The Alliance has a wide general membership committed to tackling the harm caused by tobacco.  If you would like to become a member, contact lesleythomas@nhs.net.   

Why does tobacco control matter?

Smoking is the most important preventable cause of ill-health and premature death in Devon, with more than 1,000 smoking related deaths each year in the county. Smoking costs the NHS around £2.7 billion pa on smoking related disease.  

How is it tackled?

Through six strands of action:

  • Helping smokers quit
  • Reducing the harm of secondhand smoke
  • Communication and education campaigns
  • Reducing tobacco advertising and promotion
  • Controlling tobacco products
  • Making tobacco less available
