ICS - Residential Short Breaks for Children with a Disability  (Registered with OFSTED)

The family support Service with Integrated Children’s Services is responsible for 4 short-break residential units, these units are registered with OFSTED:

  • Meadowpark, Markham Lane, Shillingford Abbot, Exeter, EX2 9QJ
  • Barnes, Belmont Road, Tiverton. EX166QY
  • Hillcrest, Awliscombe, Honiton, EX14 3NU
  • Welland, Chaddiford Lane, Barnstaple EX31 1RF

These units provide planned short-break care for children who have complex disability and where parents/carers have been assessed as being in need of such support if family breakdown or significant impairment to health and wellbeing are to be avoided.

Residential care for children under 8 years is discouraged although it is acknowledged that younger children may need to access the specialist services and staff at Meadowpark (see below).

  • Meadowpark – this unit has been substantially refurbished and redesigned to accommodate children with significant medical needs and/or physical disability.  The service has been transferred from the Royal Devon and Exeter Foundation Trust, and the new service, with nursing staff transferred from the old Honeylands unit, will open at the end of June 2011.
  • Barnes -   this is a five bedded unit that has recently been refurbished and well equipped to meet the needs of the Young People. The service provides short breaks for Young People with Additional needs, including challenging behaviour. Hillcrest will also provide periods of assessment for young people, in areas such as sleep patterns or continence.     
  • Hillcrest – this is a three bedded unit that has recently been refurbished and well equipped to meet the needs of the young people. The service provides short breaks for young people with additional needs, including challenging behaviour. Hillcrest will also provide periods of assessment for young people,   in areas such as sleep patterns or continence.
  • Welland – this is a Devon County Council, seven bedded unit that has recently been refurbished and well equipped to meet the needs of the young people. The service provides short breaks for young people with additional needs, including challenging behaviour and/or complex medical and physical needs. Welland will also provide periods of assessment for young people, in areas such as sleep patterns or continence.
