Public health nursing includes both health visiting and school nursing. These are universal services, i.e. offered to every child.
Some school nurses work in special schools for disabled children and therefore have additional specialist knowledge and skills.
Health visitors visit newborn babies and pre-school children in order to undertake child development checks and provide advice to parents/carers. They also undertake ante-natal visits in order to meet expectant mothers prior to the birth, liaising with midwives. Health visitors have also a central role in visiting and supporting children who have additional needs, including safeguarding needs. They work closely with children’s centres.
School nurses provide a wide range of services to children at school and similarly have a central role in supporting children who have safeguarding or other additional needs.
