Health Promotion Devon

Health Promotion Devon (HPD) is  the service that delivers NHS Health Promotion interventions throughout the county of Devon. HPD works with the Public Health commissioners to raise the health status of some of the most disadvantaged communities in Devon.  Addressing health inequalities is a major part of our work, the main focus being in areas of North Devon, although there are pockets of deprivation across the county.

The NHS Stop Smoking service is perhaps the most well known, and we have a team of 9 Stop Smoking advisers trained and equipped to make quitting smoking 3 times as successful as when someone tries to manage alone. We have a central call number this is manned 9-5, with an ansaphone service out of hours.  The number for quitting smoking is 01884 836024.

Other services we provide include the Health Trainer service, which provides a one to one behavioural change model.  Health Trainers are available for appointments on an individual basis to discuss and suggest action to develop a more health-enhancing life style. This might be to increase physical activity,  address  weight management, or reduce a  harmful  level of alcohol  consumption and signpost on to further services in both the private, public  or community sector if needed.

We have Health Improvement Specialists covering topics as diverse as obesity, sexual health, equality and diversity and smoking.

HPD undertakes contracts to enhance the skills of the workforce both of the NHS and wider partners, through the delivery of training on selected topics such as using a stepometer, to envourage walking.  We provide training for both the Royal Society of Public Health and City and Guilds qualification, for Health Trainer Champions and Health Trainers.

As the work of our team is subject to change each year to address current health issues, it is best in the first instance to contact the Head of Health Promotion Devon by email at jane.cowper@nhs.net , or by telephone on 01626 357027.
